On August 17, 2017, Advanced LIGO/Virgo detected the gravitational wave signature of a binary neutron star merger (BNS) for the first time (dubbed GW170817). The event will swiftly followed by hundreds of observations across the globe and electromagnetic spectrum, leading to the beginning of a new, multi-messenger era in astrophysics. In this talk, I will discuss observational and theoretical updates since the event and before the start of LIGO/Virgo’s third observing run (O3), including late-time detections of GW170817 in the near-infrared/radio. Finally, I will discuss prospects for BNS mergers in O3 and beyond.
