Christopher S. Moore is a PhD candidate at the University of Colorado at Boulder in the Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences Department. His dissertation research includes: (1) NASA Space Technology Research Fellowship (NSTRF) project to help create high reflective UV-VIS-IR coatings for the next generation of astronomical space telescopes [project advisor is Prof. Kevin France] and (2) Detector characterization and solar science analysis of the Miniature X-ray Solar Spectrometer (MinXSS) CubeSat mission [project advisor is Tom Woods]. Chris’ general research interests include the solar-stellar connection and optical properties of materials.
Abstract:
During this talk, the audience will be guided on a two part journey. Part one takes a tour into the development of atomic layer deposited thin film metal-fluorides to help create high reflective UV aluminum mirrors for future astronomical space telescopes. Improved performance in the Lyman–ultraviolet (91.2 – 121.56 nm) will enhance astronomical science investigations focused on exo-planet atmospheres, the warm galactic medium and supernovae to name a few. The second aspect includes a description of the Miniature X-ray Solar Spectrometer (MinXSS) 3U CubeSat instruments. The MinXSS mission commenced on May 16, 2017 and has been operating nominally. A demonstration of MinXSS to infer solar temperature, emission and elemental abundance properties are discussed, along with future science prospects.
