Abstract:
Asteroseismology is the only tool capable of directly probing the interior of stars. For many years the potential of this technique has been acknowledged and theoretically developed, but the paucity of data before space-born missions allowed very few investigations in stars other than the Sun. The asteroseismic revolution produced by the Kepler mission has drastically changed this scenario, providing a wealth of data that we can use to determine accurate and homogeneous fundamental parameters of stars, including distances. I revise here the resulting synergies between asteroseismic analysis and exoplanet detection and formation theory in light of Kepler and TESS, as well as the possibilities for using these large samples of targets spread across the Milky Way as a new benchmark to test our current understanding of the formation history and evolution process of our Galaxy.
