Canizares Chandra/HETG group

HETG is the High-Energy Transmission Grating on theĀ Chandra X-ray satellite. It was designed and build at MIT by the group of HETG Principal Investigator Prof. Canizares. To this day, this group uses the HETG for scientific discoveries of some of the most exciting objects in the cosmos, e.g. active galactic nuclei (AGN), accreting black holes, neutron stars, stellar flares, and star forming regions. However, this group is also part of the Chandra X-ray Center (CXC) and performs a variety of tasks to keep the HETG running and to help astronomers from all over the world to make the most of their HETG data from instrument calibration to data analysis software. The group is described in more detail at https://space.mit.edu/CXC/index.html.

Group Leader

In some respects this group operates a little different from many other faculty research groups. Instead of working on the same astrophysical objects, all group members share an interest in high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy, and apply that to very different science questions. That leads to a very broad science program unified by the technical expertise that we have in high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy (be we also use data from other wavelength ranges as needed). The list of projects below gives a broad description of the topics that members of this group work on.
